Changes to prescribing of over the counter medicines

Did you know that your local NHS spends £15m a year on prescribing medicines that are available to buy at the pharmacy?

Following national guidance from NHS England, we're asking GPs not to prescribe these medicines*, including for conditions such as coughs, colds, headaches, mouth ulcers, travel sickness and mild toothache.

Your GP will not generally give you a prescription for over the counter medicines for a range of minor health concerns. Instead, over the counter medicines are available to buy at your local pharmacy.

The team of health professionals at the pharmacy can offer help and clinical advice to manage minor health concerns and if your symptoms suggest it's more serious, they'll direct you to the help you need.

For further details, including a list of conditions the guidance applies to, please take a look at our leaflet here. https://www.healthiernorthwestlondon.nhs.uk/bettercare/otcchange

Repeat Prescriptions

Dear Registered Patients

We provide an efficient service of repeat prescriptions for our patients. Requests received before 10.30am will be usually dealt within two working days, unless the clinician needs to contact the patient for various reasons.

We are unable to accept repeat prescription requests over the phone unless there is a prior agreement with the patient. This is to protect patient confidentiality and possibility of an error.

Prescriptions cannot be requested via your nominated Pharmacy.

You can order your repeat prescription in the following ways

  •     By registering for online access at Townfield Doctors Surgery and then sign up for the NHS App - If you struggle with any aspects of downloading or using the App you can get help - click here.

  •     You can use our online form (eConsult) to contact the prescriptions team.

  •     You can complete the tear-off slip attached to your last prescription, ticking the box (es) next to the medication required. This slip can be dropped into the box outside the Practice or posted to Townfield Doctors Surgery, Next to Hayes Campus, 34 College Way, Hayes, Middlesex, UB3 3DZ. If postal requests need to be returned by post, then a stamped addressed envelope should be enclosed. Please note posted scripts can take up to one week.

An authorised representative can collect the prescription on your behalf; this can be a member of your family, a friend or a pharmacist of your choice.

Medication Reviews

Patients on repeat medication will be asked to see a doctor or practice nurse or another clinician at least once a year to review these regular medications or earlier if required. A reminder would be available on the right hand side of your prescription slip.

Please ensure that you book an appropriate appointment to avoid unnecessary delays to further process your prescriptions.

Did you know, unused prescription medicines cost the NHS across the UK over £300 million every year? There are ways you can help reduce the cost of wasted medicines!

Remember, only order what you need and help us make more of your local NHS.
